Report: Patient empowerment: for better quality, more sustainable health services globally

The result of a partnership by six All Party Parliamentary Groups in the UK, this report takes a global perspective on how to empower patients to play a more active role in their care. Drawing on case studies from low, middle and high income countries, including examples from IAPO members, it outlines how much the UK has to learn from overseas – and how these lessons should be applied. The report also highlights the UK’s strengths, its important role historically in supporting the global patient empowerment agenda, and how it can continue to play a leading role internationally.

Ascot, United Kingdom, 31 March 2014 – This was the call from Stephen Murby Wright, Consumers Health Forum of Australia during a multi-stakeholder panel discussion during the International Alliance of Patients’ Organization’s ( IAPO ) 6th Global Patients Congress, held in the UK on 29-31 March 2014. This was supported by Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer ( CMO ), UK Government, in her keynote address, who emphasised the importance of patient and public involvement: ‘Healthcare research should be carried out by and with members of the public, not just done for or to the public.’

IAPO calls on WHO Member States to develop national action plans for the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases

Tuesday 21st January 2014 - 134th Session of the World Health Organization's Executive Board, Geneva. IAPO delivered an intervention on Agenda Item 7.1: Follow up to the Political Declaration of the High-level Meeting of the General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases. IAPO called on Member States to develop national action plans to ensure that progress is sustained at the national level, as well as highlighting the importance of patients being at the centre of all NCD strategies.

The seminar entitled, ‘Meeting patients’ needs in South-East Asia – effective strategies for tackling NCDs and improving patient safety’, explored relevant issues in healthcare systems and patients’ needs from around the region.
