Dr Androulla Eleftheriou is the Executive Director of Thalassaemia International Federation. She has led TIF, a global umbrella organization federation with over 117 national thalassaemia associations in over 57 countries. Has also held the positions of the Head of the Virus Reference Centre of the Cyprus Ministry of Health and a Director of the Cyprus WHO Collaborating Centre. 


At TIF her work was recognized by the WHO with the ‘Dr Lee Jongwook Memorial Prize’ for the Federation’s outstanding contribution to public health presented during the 68th World Health Assembly in 2015. She is a Consultant to the WHO providing expert knowledge on issues related to haemoglobinopathies, her field of expertise.



  • Has experience of working at a global level with international experts and professionals on haemoglobinopathies, particularly thalassaemia.
  • Is a leading expert on blood product safety and leads on safe blood transfusion practice
  • Leading on network creation and cross sector global cooperation with State and non-State actors like health-related organizations and agencies, national health authorities and with other disease and non-disease specific patient/parents organizations in low and middle-income countries
  • A member of European Hematology Association (EHA) and the Chair of the Higher Scientific Committee of SITA (Sultan Sultan Bin Khalifa International Thalassemia Award)
  • Published extensively in peer reviewed journals and is the Chief Editor of TIF Magazine, issued quarterly and distributed to 3,500 subscribers in more than 40 countries worldwide
  • Developed many guidelines on thalassaemia clinical care practice and standards
