Involving patients and the public in new research journal

Tuesday, 26 May 2015

In recent years, there has been a rapid growth of evidence regarding the value of patient and public involvement (PPI) in research.

Defined as research ‘by’ and ‘with’  patients, carers and the public, rather than ‘about’, ‘to’ or ‘for’ them, PPI emphasises working with patients and the public to make sure that what is being done is relevant to their needs, appropriate and effective, and ensures the research is asking the right questions and using the right processes.

However, evidence around PPI remains limited, with no comparative analytic studies to provide evidence supporting any particular method, and often locked behind paywalls making it inaccessible to the patients themselves.

To address this key need, BioMed Central have established a new, open access journal called Research Involvement and Engagement. This is an interdisciplinary, health and social care journal which focuses on patient and wider involvement and engagement at all stages of research.

Research that benefits everyone

The journal is co-produced by all key stakeholders, involving patients and the wider public in every aspect of the evaluation and dissemination of research findings relating to PPI. This includes the peer review process and making both the reviews and articles publicly available so that all readers – patients and academics alike – can benefit from the research.

All articles in the journal are peer reviewed by both academic and patient reviewers, with the reports carrying equal weight in the decision-making process. The journal is led by co-Editors-in-Chief, Sophie Staniszewska and Richard Stephens, and the Editorial Board is representative of both patients and academics, reflecting a new model of academic publishing which recognises the value of the patient contribution in co-producing knowledge.

Getting involved

We encourage patients and carers to get involved with the journal, both as prospective authors and reviewers for submitted articles. We are busy reviewing papers and commentaries submitted to date, with a formal launch of Research Involvement and Engagement in June 2015.

If you have any questions, or would like to get involved with the journal, please directly contact the journal.
