Reaching the eyes and ears of decision-makers

Wednesday, 4 May 2016

Once again, the global health policy elites will meet at the 69th World Health Assembly in Geneva from 23 to 28 May 2016.

IAPO will be sending its own delegation headed by Jolanta Bilińska, our chair. The WHA is a great advocacy and networking opportunity to get to the eyes and ears of health policy decision-makers at a governmental and ministerial level, and at the same time to forge collaborative partnerships with other non-state actors to address common global health legislation, policy and practice through civil society advocacy.

We have a very busy event to plan for. We intend to make submissions and interventions on nine agenda items (see below) and we are holding one side meeting in partnership with the World Federation of Public Health Associations, Towards Unity for Health and International Federation of Community Health Centres (IFCHC) where IAPO will speak alongside WONCA and IFMSA.

Speaking at side events

There are two brilliant side events at venues near the WHA led by our industry partners that we intend to support (we are waiting for invites to others). IAPO intends to speak at a Novartis evening event hosted on the Lake Side and GSK afternoon event hosted within the iconic International Red Cross Museum opposite the UN palace. We will send details to members later, and will encourage all those members who will already be there to register and attend these events!

What is the World Health Assembly?

The World Health Assembly is the decision-making body of WHO. It is attended by delegations from all WHO Member States and focuses on a specific health agenda prepared by the Executive Board. The main functions of the World Health Assembly are to determine the policies of the Organization, appoint the Director-General, supervise financial policies, and review and approve the proposed programme budget. The Health Assembly is held annually in Geneva, Switzerland.
