“Safeguarding Blood Transfusion” side event confirmed for the 70th WHA

We are pleased to announce that our side event " safety for the multi-transfused patients” has been confirmed to take place on Friday 26 May 2017 at the 70th World Health Assembly. Linked to WHA70 agenda item of “Principles for global consensus on the donation and management of blood, blood components and medical products of human origin” the program will be advancing the 2030 agenda for sustainable development on building better systems.

The Aim

The side event is as a result of acknowledging the various issues that may arise through blood transfusion: adverse reactions and pathogens transmission. However, these events are preventable through good practices and procedures, from donor selection to processing, transport and delivery to the patient.

This side event will therefore focus on raising discussion on what is needed to safeguard blood safety for the multi-transfused patients in this new consensus framework , the patient perspective on the principles of global consensus on donation and management of blood and blood products, how with joint actions and efforts, countries can develop a consensus to prioritize safety of blood on their national agendas; how the implementation of quality standards of blood, as described in Guidelines and recommendations can ensure/ safeguard the safety of the patients most at risk.

3) The concerns of patients receiving human plasma products

4) Recommendations regarding procedures and guidelines to be adopted

6)The experiences of patients with primary immunodeficiency

7) Patient perspective on 10 global principles in the draft framework of principles and policy options- ethics, equity,  patient safety, consent, public health etc

8) Panel: What is needed to safeguard blood safety for the multi-transfused patients in this new Consensus Framework
