PSD 2017 - Patient empowerment depends on knowledgeable, skilled patients

On Saturday, 2nd December, patient advocates from across the world will rally together to mark the annual Patient Solidarity Day. As a movement, we will be standing united in recognition of the significant need for and benefit of, empowered and informed patients. We believe that patient empowerment will only be achievable if we, as patient advocates, decision-makers, policy-makers, academics and industry, all work together for ‘Globally empowered patients: Power through Knowledge’.

The subject of patient empowerment is one that concerns all patients regardless of disease or country, and it is now widely recognised that empowering patients to be actively involved in their healthcare decisions results in better quality healthcare. Since knowledge is at the very core of what constitutes successful and effective patient empowerment the day will aim to raise awareness and strengthen the understanding of why patient empowerment is vital, and how knowledge is a facilitator of the process.

We need your support to make this happen. From lobbying Ministries of Health, marches and rallying meetings of patients and stakeholders, we call on all patient groups around the world to plan on keeping up the pressure to ensure that the theme of  patient empowerment is firmly on the global health agenda.
