Our CEO Kawaldip Sehmi recently attended a consultation on the Primary Health Care Performance Initiative, which can be an ideal opportunity to include patients at every level.
As the BMGF seek patient-voice and patient-experience through patient engagement and patient-involvement, they will access more timely, accurate, relevant and high quality performance measurement information. They will also access an already existing patients' stake-holding community that can help in the knowledge-sharing to build high-performing primary health care systems that are patient-centred.
The initiative is seeking to develop a powerful set of indicators, Vital Signs, that will track primary care service performance and this can help advocates like IAPO to improve our advocacy: we will have access to high quality information from a dedicated website. The information will be fine-tuned through creative data visualisation and content arrangement, and can add impact to our messages and advocacy approaches to ensure primary care health systems are patient-centred and are:
- Available: Sufficient quantity of functioning primary healthcare facilities, goods, services and programmes
- Accessible: Primary healthcare services that are non-discriminatory, physically accessible, economically accessible (affordability),and supported by accessible information
- Acceptable: Primary healthcare services that are respectful of medical ethics and are culturally appropriate, sensitive to age and gender
- High Quality: Primary healthcare services that are scientifically and medically appropriate
