Antonia Gama, Policy Lead

Antonia is IAPO's Policy Lead and oversees our collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), policy initiatives, and drives global advocacy campaigns to advance equitable, safe, and people-centred health systems worldwide.

Antonia is a visual and urban anthropologist with over 15 years of experience in policy and applied research, human rights, and community engagement — specialising in participatory media as a catalyst for advocacy and social change.

Her career spans international NGOs, public institutions, and academia. At Rio de Janeiro’s State Department of Human Rights and UN-Habitat, Antonia contributed to the design and implementation of participatory social policies in close collaboration with favela residents and community advocates in Rio.

With a PhD in Social Anthropology and Visual Media from the University of Manchester and an extensive background in storytelling, film, and art installations, she brings a creative approach that weaves together her roles as a researcher, lecturer, policymaker, and activist — seeing them not as separate, but as interconnected parts of her work to drive meaningful change.

Whether crafting strategies, fostering partnerships, or producing multimedia content, Antonia is dedicated to justice-driven, inclusive approaches that centre lived experience and transform systems from the ground up.
